What Are Downloadable Audio Books?
Downloadable audio books are digital books the library is making available through a service called OverDrive. These talking books are available via a computer to those with home computers, MP3 players and laptops. Users can log into the OverDrive Digital book Web site, find a digital audio book, and put that book on their device to listen to it. After one week, the book disappears from the person’s computer and is available for the next patron to check out.
How to Use Downloadable Audio Books:
1. Go to the OverDrive Digital book site at http://dbooks.wplc.info.
2. Search for books by title, author, subject—or just browse the available titles.
3. Once you find a title you’d like to listen to, add it to your cart. If you’re ready to checkout, you can then proceed to checkout or continue browsing.
4. If you are on a library computer, you aren’t able to download titles, but you can search for titles and check them out. You’ll need your library card and PIN to check out books.
5. Download your titles at home or on a wireless laptop computer at the library. Before you download books, you need to download the OverDrive Media Console.
6. You can check out up to four titles. After one week, the titles are “returned” to
the library. You don’t have to do anything to return books!
7. If a book is checked out, you can put a hold on it. You’ll get an email when the book is available, and you have 72 hours from the email to check the book out. You can put holds on up to five books.
8. After you check out a book and download it, you can: listen to the book on the computer you downloaded to, burn the book to a CD, or copy the book onto a supported digital audio player. To find audio players that support OverDrive, check http://www.playsforsure.com.
9. OverDrive digital audiobooks do not work with Ipods. Instead,
you may browse these free sites for audiobooks that work with all standard
digital media devices: LibroVox,
Spoken Alexandria ,
Literal Systems.
10.
The library will purchase more digital books in the future; check back for
more selections.
