Nautical Charts

Use this special Milwaukee Public Library collection to chart your course! Maps of world waterways are called "charts," and the library gives you access to thousands of them.

As an official government depository library, Milwaukee Public Library has all nautical charts published by the federal government. These detailed maps provide just what the mariner needs to sail or steam to any port on earth. CountyCat, the library catalog, contains a detailed description of each chart.

Great Lakes Nautical Charts
The Great Lakes collection of nautical charts dates back to the 1800s. Many underwater divers have used these charts to find "buried treasure." To research what lies on the bottom of the freshwater seas, visit Central Library and ask at the Frank P. Zeidler Humanities Room desk for a list of charts and which edition of each chart the library owns.
