Toddler story times at the Central Library are designed to introduce your child to language, literature and the library. By exposing your toddler to a wide variety of the best books available and making reading an everyday part of life, you will lay the foundations for a lifelong love of reading.

Please, come early to experience our wonderful preschool area. Children can take advantage of our Duplo block building tables, dramatic puppet play and stage area, the lighthouse allowing them a birds-eye view of the room and, of course, lots of terrific books. A little play time can help prepare them to give their full attention to the stories, songs and activities during story time. An early arrival also allows time for bathroom visits and taking off cold weather gear.

Toddler story times like "Tales for Twos" will benefit children because:

  • Participation through stories, felt board activities, finger plays, and singing expands their vocabulary as well as improves their listening and speaking abilities.
  • Singing and listening to songs that rhyme, or are repetitive, promotes language development through recognition of patterns and sounds.
  • Experiencing movement activities, such as finger plays, allows their minds and muscles to work together.
  • Opportunities to be near others, observe, follow along and share, promote beginning social skills. The safe atmosphere also allows children chances to achieve success and boost self-esteem.

And caregivers because:

  • Learning different ways to interact with children allows adults to practice new communication skills with children. These skills promote healthy development and readiness for the future success of children.
  • Positive experiences between adults and children serve as a safeguard against future stress and encourages emotional resiliency in children.
  • Talking with other parents or caregivers and sharing tips and experiences can reduce adults’ stress.
  • Librarians are available to assist in locating resources on learning. The librarian will also model techniques which caregiver’s can use at home.
