What is the Super Reader
School Challenge and How Does it Work?
The Summer Reading program at the Milwaukee Public Library
is called Super Reader and has a super
hero theme. The Super Reader program is designed
to get children to view themselves as readers. The
main goal is to cultivate a natural desire in Milwaukee’s
children to want to read.
The School Challenge is the way the
Milwaukee Public library is promoting the Super Reader
program to schools. The School Challenge gives schools
a goal to strive for – to get as many students as
possible to level 3 of the Super Reader program.
Students keep track of the time they read in their folder. They
can track the time they read themselves, have someone read
to them, or read to someone else. They can also earn
credit for creating a picture or writing a story about
what they’ve read and for visits to the library and
for attending library programs.
For each level children complete they earn prizes they
can collect at any Milwaukee Public Library.
There are 13 Milwaukee Public
Library locations. Each
library has a service area. For each service
area the school with the most students reaching level 3
(out of 5 levels) will earn a “Reading Rally” which
includes a visit by a magician or storyteller during the
2008/2009 school year and a plaque the school can proudly
display for all to see.
The library is distributing reading folders to many schools. Students
officially sign up at the library by bringing their reading
folder to the librarian. If they don’t have
a folder, they can get one at the library. There
is a place on the folder for students to list their school.
The library maintains a database of all schools in the
city of Milwaukee and their attendance numbers. If
you would like to confirm your attendance numbers please
call 286-3091. Attendance numbers are used to calculate
the percentage of children completing the Super Reader
program.
Students can claim their prizes at the Milwaukee Public
Library starting June 2nd through July 31, 2008.
The Milwaukee Public Library will announce the winners
of the School Challenge in September 2008.
