This week the Milwaukee Public Library kicks off the annual Summer Reading Program encouraging children and young adults to read for fun over the summer to keep their reading skills sharp. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee is an important library partner that values Summer Reading and incorporates the program into curriculum at its summer program sites that serve school-age children.

Tippecanoe Library, a branch of the Milwaukee Public Library system, is slated for a makeover later this year. In his 2014 budget, Mayor Tom Barrett prioritized redevelopment of the library branch system in a multi-year building and renovation program with an investment of $21.5 million over five to seven years.
Exterior Public Art Finalists
The Milwaukee Public Library announced the finalists selected to present design concepts for a public art commission to be installed outside of the new East
Branch which will open in late 2014. The creative work is tasked with activating the space outside the library and engaging visitors while reflecting the ideas of community, literature, story and learning.

Artist Santiago Cucullu Invites Milwaukeeans to Share Their Stories
Santiago Cucullu, one of two local artists recently selected to create public art installations in the new East Branch, is seeking public participation in his commission. He wants to know what architectural features around Milwaukee Libraries are inherent parts of your story. Milwaukee residents of all ages are encouraged to share stories about key events in their lives that occurred near one of MPL’s branch libraries. The stories and images will inspire a series of murals inside the library that are based on geographical features surrounding MPL locations.

Milwaukee Public Library Needs Adult Tutors
Adult volunteers are needed to provide one-on-one tutoring for adult learners at the Milwaukee Public Library. The volunteers will provide tutoring for Milwaukee residents ages 18 and older who want to upgrade their basic math and reading skills, and for adults working toward completing their GED or studying English as a second language.
