"A Mere Amusement of a Very Inferior Character." Chess Club meets Wednesday at the East Branch Library

By Beth G. on Aug 25, 2015 3:42 PM

"A game of chess does not add a single new fact to the mind; it does not excite a single beautiful thought; nor does it serve a single purpose for polishing and improving the nobler faculties."

What?!

Apparently the Scientific American thought chess was the 1850s equivalent of an evil, time sucking video-game; a "pernicious" and "cheerless" pursuit that only made people sedentary and lose sight of more important goals.

The full article of the 1859 Scientific American is available online for your daily dose of astonishment.

Well, we beg to differ, and the East Branch Chess Club will show you why this Wednesday 08.26.15 at 5:30 p.m.  Bring a friend or just yourself.  The library will have two boards set up, or bring your own.

Can't make it this week?  The East Branch Chess Club meets every fourth Wednesday of the Month.

Upcoming Dates:

09.23.15

10.28.15

11.25.15

12.23.15
