Hispanic Grocers in Milwaukee

By Brett R on Oct 6, 2014 11:00 AM

The diverse cultural mix that makes up Milwaukee has left its mark on the city in many ways. It's hard to imagine a more noticeable one than the city's many ethnic grocers. From the old Polish and Italian stores to the more recent Indian and Asian ones, anyone can travel the world gastronomically in just a few city blocks.

Hispanic grocers are a major part of this presence. They dot many corners of south side neighborhood blocks but can be found all over the city. They offer hard-to-find products from the homelands of recent immigrants and give anybody the opportunity to try something different.

According to the book Latinos in Milwaukee, the first Hispanic grocer in the city was Morales’, located on S. 5th St. It opened in 1926. Other pioneers include Luciano Haro, who opened his own grocery on South Fifth in 1931, and José Cardena, proprietor of the J. Cardena's Grocery at 6th and Walker, which existed from 1940 to 1963. Many others followed as the Latino community grew.

Today, Supermercado El Rey is the best known local name in ethnic groceries. It has four locations and is the largest Latino-owned grocery store chain in the state. They also have bakeries and restaurants in their stores, as well as their own line of food products sold in many other grocery stores. Be sure to check out these wonderful local businesses the next time you're not sure what to make for dinner. You just might be inspired by what you find.
