Slavery by Another Name Film Screening and Discussion @ Villard Square

By MPL Staff on Apr 2, 2014 3:09 PM

slavery-by-another-name-cover.pngJoin the Milwaukee Public Library and America's Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM) for films and discussions on the past, present and future of civil rights in America. The Created Equal Film Series uses the power of documentary films to encourage community discussion of America's civil rights history. Slavery by Another Name It was a shocking reality that often went unacknowledged, then and now: A huge system of forced, unpaid labor, mostly affecting Southern black men, that lasted until World War II. Based on the Pulitzer-Prize-winning book by Douglas Blackmon, Slavery By Another Name tells the stories of men, charged with crimes like vagrancy, and often guilty of nothing, who were bought and sold, abused, and subject to sometimes deadly working conditions as unpaid convict labor. Join us Tuesday, April 15th at 5:15 p.m. at Villard Square for the film followed by a discussion facilitated by Dr. Robert Smith of ABHM. The Created Equal film series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative and in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
