Around the World in 50 Years by Albert Podell

Travel writing just doesn’t get better than this! Besides Mark Twain’s Innocents Abroad and Roughing It, I can’t remember enjoying a travel book more. Part adventure stories and part travelogues, this fun, well written book is like an Abbott and Costello travel movie in modern times. Podell, a former editor of Playboy, made a vow to travel to every country on Earth and by George, he’s done it!

I will honestly say that after reading this book, I think I’ll avoid travelling in Africa at all costs. Haiti doesn’t sound very nice either. I also learned to beware Australian customs and never, ever fly to Kiribati (Tarawa) without an alternate method of getting off the island if your return flight gets cancelled.

A few other tidbits to remember are to never show the soles of your feet or discuss shoes in Saudi Arabia, buy cheap T-shirts in New York City to use as bribes to border guards throughout Africa and absolutely never offer your girlfriend for sale to appease angry political figures in Algeria (he may take you up on the offer—then you have REAL GRIEF!).

Well written, funny, tense and adventurous, Around the World in 50 Years is a great way to travel the world from your own home. Highly recommended.
