Civil Rights activists were extremely active in Milwaukee during the 1960s. Some of the major causes at the time were protests against the Eagles Club for their "whites only" membership policy, and marches in support of Alderman Vel Phillips' Open Housing bill. All Civil Rights photographs in Milwaukee Public Library's Historic Photo Collection are now digitized. Some of the photos you've seen before, but there are over 50 newly digitized photos of events from the Civil Rights movement in Milwaukee. It used to be that you would have to come to the downtown library's Humanities department to see some of these awesome photos, but now you can view them all online from the comfort of your own home!
