Don't miss this scathing portrait of an urgent new American crisis.

By Brett R on Jun 4, 2014 1:13 PM

In his last book, Griftopia, Matt Taibbi detailed the multiple ways the financial sector has manipulated the economy for its own profit. This resulted in the fleecing of ordinary Americans in ways they might never have realized. Such unregulated behavior has only served to widen the gap between the rich and poor.

In his new book, The Divide, Taibbi explores what this widening means. He discusses how, in the aftermath of the criminal behavior that resulted in the 2008 economic crash, hardly any of the executives who directly caused the crash have been punished in any real way. However, more and more Americans at the other end of the economic spectrum are tossed around by our legal system for minor offenses and petty frauds. The wealth gap, Taibbi contends, is creating a justice gap where wealthy Americans receive little or no punishment for their crimes, but poor Americans face harsh penalties – ones with greater life repercussions – for their relatively smaller-scale offenses.

If this is the kind of thing that makes you angry, you need to read Taibbi’s book.
