November is Native American Heritage Month

By Brett R on Nov 3, 2014 11:30 AM

November is Native American Heritage Month! We will be celebrating the contributions of Native Americans to local and Wisconsin culture throughout the month on Now@MPL.

The beginnings of Native American Heritage Month can be traced back nearly a century. In 1915, the United States Congress declared an "American Indian Day" to be celebrated on the second Saturday of May. Several states designated honorary days for Native Americans as well. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush approved a Congressional joint resolution to declare all of November 1990 Native American Heritage Month. Every President has subsequently proclaimed every November thus since 1994. (http://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/about/index.html)

Milwaukee and Wisconsin reflect myriad influences of Native American history and culture. Wisconsin has been home to tribes such as the Menominee, the Ojobwe, and the Potawatomi. Their legacy can be seen in the name of our great city and communities across the state, as well as in events like the Indian Summer Festival, our language, clothing, and even food. Stay tuned to Now@MPL to learn more about Wisconsin Native American history!
