Biography and Genealogy Master Index is a comprehensive index (not full-text articles) to over 15 million biographical sketches on nearly 5 million people in more than 1,000 volumes and editions of current and retrospective reference books, covering both contemporary and historical figures, living or dead, throughout the world. One of the largest libraries of military history information on the World Wide Web. This U.S. Army site includes online bookshelves, photographs, and lineage and honor.
Children in Urban America Project
This is a collection of documents and photographs about the history of children in Milwaukee from the 1850s to the present. It offers an archive of more than 5400 newspaper articles, public documents, oral histories, letters and other sources, focusing on growing up in Milwaukee over the last 150 years.
Civil War Soldiers & Sailors
This is the National Park Service computerized database of Civil War Soldiers & Sailors. There is a complete searchable index of U.S. Colored Troops and more than six million soldiers.
Country Studies/Area Handbooks
Handbooks analyzing the political, economic, social, and national security systems & institutions of over 100 countries. The website contains online versions of books previously published (1988-98) in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Army. About half of the studies have been updated more recently. The date of information for each country appears on the title page of each country and at the end of each section of text.

The Dictionary of Wisconsin History is a collection of words and phrases gathered from the Turning Points in Wisconsin History digital collection. Certain names of people, places, things, and events specific to Wisconsin can be found in this growing online dictionary.

Great Lakes Marine Collection
This database contains information on over 10,000 Great Lakes vessels from 1815 to the present: some that are diesel-powered, some rigged with sails, and some barges; cargo vessels, passenger boats, military and even pleasure craft. It also includes the names of owners, captains and builders of the vessels. The database was created by the Library and the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society with the Shipshape grant.
Historic Preservation Commission
This site contains records on local properties. Towards the bottom of the first page, look for "Properties and Districts." Click on Locally-designated areas to find Historic Designation Study Reports and some photos on neighborhoods and individual properties.

History Reference Center  MPL Special Link
History Reference Center from EBSCO is a full text history database designed for secondary schools, public libraries, junior/community colleges, and undergraduate research. It features content from more than 2,500 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books from history publishers and full text for nearly 170 periodicals including American Heritage, American Historical Review, American History, Archaeology, Aviation History, Chinese America: History & Perspectives, Civil War Times, German History, History Today (back to January 1975), Journal of American History, Military History, Naval History, Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Wild West, Wisconsin Magazine of History, and World War II, in addition to other titles. Further, the database contains more than 112,000 historical documents (such as landmark legal decisions); more than 113,000 biographies of historical and current figures; over 112,000 historical photos and maps; and 80+ hours of historical video. Provided as part of Wisconsin's BadgerLink program.

Internet Archive
The Internet Archive is a comprehensive library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form, today launched the Wayback Machine, a free service allowing people to access and use archived versions of past Web pages. For the first time, all members of the public will be able to search and view the Internet Archive*s enormous collection of Web sites, dating back to 1996 and comprising over 10 billion Web pages.

Making of America, Cornell University
Cornell Unversity Library's contribution to MOA consists of more than 100,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints including The Atlantic Monthly (1857-1901), Scientific American (1846-1869), Manufacture and Builder (1869-1894) and others. This site also has the U.S. War Department's Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion and the U.S. Naval War Records The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies.
Making of America, University of Michigan
Digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period
through reconstruction, comprising nearly 11,000 volumes published from 1850-1876.
Making of Milwaukee
The Making of Milwaukee documentary series, based on local historian John Gurda's book by the same name, details the rich history of our city. This Web site includes historic photographs, an interactive timeline, and educational materials for use in the classroom.
Milwaukee County Historical Society
The Society collects, preserves, and makes available materials relating to the history of the Milwaukee community through a broad range of activities, an extensive library and archives of government and naturalization records, photo collections and personal papers.
Milwaukee Neighborhoods
The UWM Libraries have developed an extensive online digital collection titled "Milwaukee Neighborhoods: Photos and Maps 1885-1992." The collection presents 638 images of Milwaukee's neighborhoods from the Far Northwest Side to the Far South Side, providing a visual documentation of the development of the city.
Milwaukee Road Historical Association
Membership society in which hobbyists, historians, model railroaders, and others join in preserving and reliving the history of the famed Milwaukee Road. The society has many special membership benefits including the opportunity to assist the Milwaukee Public Library in cataloging the Milwaukee Road Archives

Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers
The Wisconsin Historical Society has reproduced here a set of volumes which list all the soldiers known to have participated in Wisconsin's Civil War regiments. Known as the Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865, these two volumes were compiled in 1886 from original archival records, and their alphabetical index was published in 1914.

Wisconsin Black Historical Society / Museum
The Wisconsin Black Historical Society / Museum's mission is to document and preserve the historical heritage of African descent in Wisconsin. The museum exhibits, collects and disseminates materials depicting this heritage. Serving as a resource center for all people interested in Wisconsin's rich African American heritage, the Museum's purpose is to promote community and cultural activities.
Wisconsin Electronic Reader
Stories, essays, letters, poems, biographies, journals and and tidbits from Wisconsin history. There are many first hand accounts accompanied by digitized illustrations. This is a cooperative digital imaging project of the University of Wisconsin-Madison General Library System and the Wisconsin Historical Society, funded in part by the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Commission.
Wisconsin Historical Society
The Wisconsin Historical Society (formerly the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (SHSW)) preserves historical materials in many forms documenting a wide array of subjects concentrating on collecting and disseminating knowledge of Wisconsin and of the trans-Allegheny West. It serves as the archives of the State of Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Local History & Biography Articles
By the end of 2001, the Wisconsin Historical Society will have placed online 16,000 articles on people and places in Wisconsin. The material comes from newspaper articles found in scrapbooks available in the WHS Archives. The years cover 1860-1940.
Wisconsin Name Index
Obituaries, personal sketches, and other short biographies of Wisconsinites are indexed in this resource from the Wisconsin Historical Society. The Society will provide full-text copies from the sources cited for a fee. Many of the sources cited for the obituary or sketch may be available at the Milwaukee Public Library.
Wisconsin Public Land Survey Records
The Public Land survey of Wisconsin was conducted between 1833-1866 to divide the land into lots for sale. Surveyors recorded notes and these field notes are now available online. The notes may describe landscape or vegetation, surface of land, quality of soil, etc. The notes may be difficult to read as there has been some deterioration of the paper along with fading ink. Plat maps are being added.
World War I Military Portrait Index
The Milwaukee Public Library's special collections include 3,192 photographs of World War I military personnel from Milwaukee County. The names of individuals in the photograph collection are listed on this site. Use the alphabetical search key to look for an individual name.
