Canadian Patent Database
The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) Canadian Patent Database (CPD) provides access to over 75 years of Canadian patent descriptions and images totalling more than 1,500,000 Canadian patent documents.

The European Patent Office site which allows searching European (EP) patents, PCT (WO) patents, Japanese patents, and worldwide patents (including U.S.). For the U.S. Patents, bibliographic data dates back to 1968 and facsimile images (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader or similar application to retrieve) date back to 1920. The database is updated on a weekly basis. Be sure to use the icon buttons for full access to abstracts and images.

National Inventors Hall of Fame
The National Inventors Hall of Fame is a searchable database provided by the non-profit organization called Invent Now. Search by inventor, invention, date, decade or browse by keyword.
P2P.org
This site is particularly useful for printing out full-text U.S. Patent documentation in sequence. Unlike the USPTO Patent Office site, the user does not need to print out only one patent page at a time. Enter the patent number into the box and it will display the entire patent.
PAIR (Patent Application Information and Retrieval)
PAIR is the Patent Application Information Retrieval system that displays information regarding patent application status. There is both a Public and Private side to PAIR.  Public PAIR  only displays issued or published application status. To access Public PAIR, you need only have a patent, application, or publication number that you wish to search. Private PAIR is the Patent Application Information Retrieval system developed to provide secure access for customers who want to view current patent application status electronically via the Internet.
Patent and Trademark Depository Program
Helpful site which answers Frequently Asked Questions about Patents or Trademarks, lists PTDLs (Patent & Trademark Depository Libraries) and the History and Background of the program, and provides helpful tutorials (click on the link: Basic Materials and Services).
Patent Search Tutorial
This tutorial from the Shreyer Business Library at Penn State University, will assist beginning patent searchers with the various steps involved in U.S. patent searching.
PCT Applicants Guide
Use this site as a source of patent information for participating countries data on patent fees and procedures. The Patent Cooperative Treaty (PCT) is a consortium of countries sharing information. The paper edition of this guide ceased publication in 2000.
Search U.S. Trademarks
Here is the link to the USPTO site for information on filing for a trademark (fees, forms, etc.) and searchable databases that list pending and registered trademarks and images (NOTE: There is a substantial delay between issuance of a trademark and availability of the image, due to the time required by the scanning process). This database provides access to the trademark text data currently available on two of PTO's Cassis CD-ROM products: Trademarks Registered and Trademarks Pending. Both the CD-ROM and Web products are updated on a two-month cycle.

This is the official U.S. Commerce site that allows searching of the full text of bibliographic and full-text patent databases dating back to 1976. Be sure to read and understand the limitations of these Web databases to avoid significant problems. Note that the Central Library of the Milwaukee Public Library System is a full regional Patent and Trademark Depository Library (PTDL), an excellent resource for questions about patenting an idea.
