Free Spot Wireless Access

Setup Information
SSID: MPLWIRELESS
Standard: 802.11b Encryption: None Price: Free

What is FreeSpot?
Free Spot is computer talk for a wireless access point that's available for public use. All Milwaukee Public Libraries are Free Spots.

What is WiFi?
WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity. It's an over-the-air connection that allows anyone with a computer or PDA to access the Internet. These devices are required to include a wireless PC-Card (802.11b at 2.4Ghz) component and an Internet browser.

Is there technical support?
Unfortunately library staff cannot provide support for connecting to the wireless network. See the basic instructions below. For other technical help contact the manufacturer of your wireless card or PDA.

Windows OS

Right click on My Network Places/Network Neighborhood.
Go to Properties.
Double click Wireless Adapter.
(Or simply click on your vendor icon for the wireless adapter in the lower right hand tool bar.)

Then...
Set the SSID to MPLWIRELESS (all capital letters). A DHCP address will be allocated automatically.
Make sure the wireless encryption privacy - WEP - option is set to "off."
Set the network type option to "infrastructure" not "ad hoc" (peer to peer).
Restart (reboot) the computer.
(This is not a requirement with Windows XP system.)
You can now open a web browser.

MAC OS

Click on System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
Double Click the Network logo.
Under "Show Menu" select Airport.
Close Window
Open "Internet Connect." Turn on Airport.
From Network Menu select MPLWIRELESS.
You can now open a web browser.
