Books and Materials
Can I check out magazines?
There are some popular magazines available for checkout, however, the
majority of library subscription magazines are for reference use only.
How can I get photocopies of library materials?
DITTO, a copy service of the Milwaukee Public
Library, provides copies
of library materials via mail or fax if exact citation information
is provided.
Computers
How can I register for a computer class?
Register for free library computer classes
by finding the class you're interested in on the Calendar of Events,
then registering online. A librarian can help. Space is limited and classes
fill quickly. Preference will be given to
City
of
Milwaukee
residents
and
those who
have not
previously
attended a class. Walk-ins are welcome if space is available. Late registrants
may lose seating to walk-ins once class has begun.

How do I place a Hold on an item?
Place a hold a book or other item when using the online catalog by clicking
on the "Request" button at the top of the screen. You will be
notified by phone, or online,
when the item is ready to be picked up.
Is there a grace period for overdue items?
For most items there is a three-day grace period during which no fines
are charged. On the fourth day the overdue charges total 40 cents.
How will I know if I have fines or overdue items?
You can check your record online by following the directions for
establishing a PIN and viewing your library record listed here.
Can I renew library items?
Most three-week loan items may be renewed twice for an additional three
weeks. Most 7-day items may be renewed twice for an additional
seven days. Items that may not be renewed include 3-day DVDs and videos
and items that are on hold by another customer. Items may be renewed
in person by bringing in the item(s) and your library card, online,
or by phone.
Can I check out library materials if I don't have my card with me?
You can still check out materials for a nominal charge when you show identification
with your name and address.
May I return materials I borrowed from one library to another library?
Materials may be returned to any library in the Milwaukee
County Federated Library System.
What happens if I lose my card?
Report a lost card promptly. You are responsible for materials borrowed
up to the time the card is reported lost. You may report a lost card
by phone or in person at Central Library or your neighborhood library.
For lost cards there is a $1 replacement charge.
Should I notify the library if my address changes?
Report changes of address promptly. Visit any library location to update
your address. You will be asked to show one form of identification with
your new address.
I don't remember my PIN. How can I view my library card record now?
If you forget your PIN, you will need to have your PIN deleted so you
can enter a new one. You may visit the library or call the library to
have your old PIN deleted so you can establish a new PIN. You will be
asked for verifying ID in order to protect your patron record. Security
reasons prevent the library from changing PINs via e-mail.
May others use my card?
No. Library cards are non-transferable. Report a lost card promptly.
You are responsible for materials borrowed up to the time the card
is reported lost. You may report a lost card by phone or in person
at Central Library or your neighborhood library.
How many items may I check out?
New borrowers are limited to five items total the first three weeks they
have their card. None of the items may be CDs, CD-ROMS, or videos.
Loan limits on library materials vary widely throughout the Milwaukee
County Federated Library System. Please check with library staff at your
location for assistance.

How do I donate money to the Library Foundation?
Support the library by becoming a Friend
of the Library or call the Milwaukee Public Library Foundation at
(414) 286-8720 to find out about purchasing books, including the library
in your Will, or making other contributions to the Foundation.

for library programs, story times, and special author events.
Volunteers
Can I volunteer at the library?
There are a number of volunteer opportunities available at the library.
To volunteer at the Bookseller or special book sales, assist with special
author events, provide office/clerical support to the Foundation office
or become a library docent tour guide, contact the Milwaukee Public Library
