The American Library Association has identified these six key skills that will prepare children to become readers when they enter school:

  • Print Motivation
    Being excited about and interested in books.
  • Phonological Awareness
    Playing with the sounds in words.
  • Narrative Skills
    Telling stories and describing things.
  • Enriched Vocabulary
    Knowing the specific names of things.
  • Print Awareness
    Noticing print everywhere, knowing how to handle a book, and following words on a page.
  • Letter Knowledge
    Knowing the difference between how letters look, their names, and their sounds.

The library has workshops for families to learn more about the Six Skills and fun, easy ways to develop them in children ages 0-5. All children's programs held at the library reinforce these skills. Search the Library Events Calendar for Books2Go programs and activities at your library such as:

Early Learning Family Pizza Night
Families with children ages 5 and younger are invited to a fun-filled night with pizza and a story time presented by Milwaukee Public Library’s ‘Ready to Read’ staff. You are your child’s first and most important teacher! Learn the six skills you can develop in your children so they are ready to learn to read when they enter school. Free pizza is included with this workshop. Children will be treated to a special story time. Each family will receive a free gift. Space is limited, call 286-8423 to register.

Noche familiar de aprendizaje y pizza
Los expertos han identificado seis destrezas de la alfabetización temprana que cada niño necesita para que esté preparado para aprender a leer en cuanto ingrese a la escuela. Las familias con niños de 5 años y menores están bienvenidas a una noche divertida con una cena de pizza y una hora de cuentos presentada por el personal del programa Ready to Read (Listos para leer) de la Biblioteca Pública de Milwaukee.
