The first day of school is both exciting and scary no matter what age you are, so here are some books to get kids psyched and help them make that transition from hot summer days to cool school days.

Maisy Goes to Preschool by Lucy Cousins. Ages 2-4.
Preschool for Maisy means a day filled with friends and things to do--there’s painting and snack time, stories and nap time (and a bathroom break in-between) and even a turn at the sandbox or slide.

My Preschool by Anne Rockwell.  Ages 2-4.
Follow a little boy during his day at preschool from cheerful hellos in circle time, to painting colorful pictures and playing at the water table, to passing out paper cups for snack.

Spot Loves School by Eric Hill. Ages 2-4.
Spot enjoys his first day of school.

The Bus Stop by Janet Morgan Stoeke. Ages 3-6.
Kindergartners gather for their exciting first ride on the school bus.

First Day of School by Mercer Mayer. Ages 3-6.
Little Critter is a bit nervous about starting school today. There's a lot to be done before he can even get on the bus—he has to pick out his clothes, find his backpack, pack the perfect lunch, and say good-bye to Mom.

Five Little Monkeys Go Shopping by Eileen Christelow.  Ages 3-6.
Five little monkeys go shopping for school clothes with their mama, but in spite of her warnings about not wandering off, things quickly get complicated

I’m Your Bus by Marilyn Singer. Ages 3-7.
In rhyming text, a school bus describes its busy day transporting children to and from school.

Nuestro Autobus /The Bus for Us by Suzanne Bloom.  Picture Book. Ages 3-7.
On the first day of school, Tess wonders what the school bus will look like.  Each page features large Spanish text followed by smaller English translation text.

Kindergarten Countdown by Anna Hays. Ages 4-6.
Lucy is counting down seven days before kindergarten starts. She plans and prepares each day, from imagining what she will bring to show-and-tell, to choosing her “superhero sweater that makes me feel strong and better.”

Kindergarten Rocks! by Katie Davis. Ages 4-6.
Dexter knows everything there is to know about kindergarten and is not at all scared about his first day there, but his stuffed dog, Buster, is very nervous.

Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney. Ages 4-6.
Llama Llama experiences separation anxiety on his first day of nursery school. 

Splat the Cat by Rob Scotton. Ages 4-6.
A nervous Splat finds his first day at Cat School to be much better than he expected.

Keisha Ann Can! by Daniel Kirk. Ages 4-7.
Keisha Ann is proud of all the things she can do during her day at school.

First Grade Stinks! by Mary Ann Rodman. Ages 5-7.
First-grader Haley wishes she were back having fun in kindergarten with her old teacher, until she finds out that first grade is special, too. 

I Don’t Like to Read! by Nancy Carlson. Ages 5-7.
Henry likes everything about school except reading. Reading is "boring" and "dumb," but when confronted by his nurturing teacher, he admits that "words and letters just don't make any sense."

Jake Starts School by Michael Wright. Ages 5-7.
No one can pry a frightened Jake away from his parents on the first day of school, so the three must watch as his classmates have fun until, at the end of the day, his teacher finally gets him to let go.

Max Goes to School by Adria Klein. Ages 6-8.
Tag along with Max on his first day back at school.

Super Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold. Ages 6-8.
Fly Guy accompanies his best bud Buzz to school, and discovers fly heaven--the lunchroom.

All Mixed Up! by Kim Wayans. Ages 7-10.
Attending a "regular" school for the first time, former homeschooler Amy, whose family is racially mixed, meets new friends who celebrate their differences and include Amy in the upcoming talent show. 

Keena Ford and the Second-Grade Mix-Up by Melissa Thomson. Ages 7-10.
Keena Ford chronicles her many mishaps as she begins second grade.
 
Raymond and Graham Rule the School by Mike Knudson. Ages 7-10.
Best friends Raymond and Graham have looked forward to being the "oldest, coolest, toughest" boys at East Millcreek Elementary School, but from the start of fourth grade everything goes wrong, from getting the scary teacher to not getting the lead in the school play.

The Fabled Fourth Graders of Aesop Elementary School by Candace Fleming. Ages 8-11.
Nobody wants to teach this year's fourth-grade class at Aesop Elementary, until Mr. Jupiter appears, just like Mary Poppins. In his capable hands, the class learns their lessons, each accompanied by an Aesop-like moral.

Make Way for Dyamonde Daniel by Nikki Grimes. Ages 8-11.
Smart, confident Dyamonde sits in her third-grade classroom and wonders why she’s been at her new school for weeks and still doesn’t have a best friend. Then in walks Free, a new student who’s so irritable that Dyamonde secretly names him Rude Boy.

The New Girl by Meg Cabot. Ages 8-11.
Allie Finkle is the new girl and she’s already made friends, but unfortunately enemies, too. Allie figures out some rules for dealing with bullies.
