Did You Know?

Toddlers needs lots of experience hearing words and language. The more you talk to them, the better their language skills will be.

Talk through daily routines (“now we let the water go down the drain”), name everything: objects (“here’s a hammer, a screwdriver, and pliers”), body parts (“your fingers, nails, knuckles, wrist”), animals (“I see a cricket, a robin, an earthworm”), and vehicles (“that truck is a front-loader, and there’s a crane”). If you don’t know what something is, say so…and go to the library together to find a book about it so you can both learn.

Touching different parts of their bodies with their eyes closed is a challenge for toddlers. This is a game that can be practiced anywhere, even in the car when your child is getting restless. “Close your eyes and touch your knee. Open your eyes to see if you found it.”
(from Storytimes for Two-Year-Olds by Judy Nichols)

Songs & Nursery Rhymes

I Have a Nose
On my face I have a nose,
And way down here I have ten toes.
I have two eyes that I can blink,
I have a head to help me think.
I have a chin and very near,
I have two ears to help me hear.
I have a mouth with which to speak,
And when I run I use my feet.
Here are arms to hold up high,
And here’s a hand to wave good-bye!

We Can Jump
We can jump, jump, jump.
We can hop, hop, hop.
We can clap, clap, clap.
We can stop, stop, stop.

We can nod our heads for “yes,”two girls jumping rope
We can shake our heads for “no.”
We can bend our knees a little bit
And sit…down…slow.

See How I Am Nowlittle boy with truck
Sometimes I am tall (stand tall)
Sometimes I am small (crouch)
Sometimes I am very, very tall
(stand on tiptoes)
Sometimes I am very, very small
(crouch and hug self)
Sometimes tall, Sometimes small.
See how I am now.

Clap Your Hands
Clap your hands, Touch your toes.
Stamp your feet, Wiggle your nose.

Clap your hands, Touch your wrist.
Stamp your feet, Make a fist.

Clap your hands, Touch your hips.
Stamp your feet, Smack your lips.

Clap your hands, Touch your thighs.
Stamp your feet, Blink your eyes.
