Colorful
Butterfly
You will need: paper towels, newspapers, food coloring or tempura
paint, sponge or small paintbrush, pipe cleaners and small containers
(baby food jars, margarine containers, muffin pan)
Cover the table with newspapers, several layers thick. Lay a paper
towel flat on the newspapers. Pour food colors into separate containers
for each color. With the sponge or paintbrush, help children dab or
drop each color on the paper towel. Help children notice how the colors
spread through the towel. Where they mingle, new colors are created.
Clear water can be sprinkled on the towel to lighten or spread the
colors more. Hang the towel and let it dry thoroughly.
When dry, fold the towel lengthwise in accordion pleats. Pinch the
pleats together at the center and twist a pipe cleaner around to hold
them. Curve the ends of the pipe cleaner to look like antennae, and
fluff out the paper towel on both sides of the pipe cleaner to form
wings. Decorate your windows or room with beautiful butterflys!

Tune of: Wheels on the Bus
The firefly at night goes blink,
blink, blink;
Blink, blink, blink; Blink, blink, blink.
The firefly at night goes blink, blink, blink -
All around the town.
The bees in the flowers go buzz, buzz, buzz...
The ants in the grass go march, march, march...
The crickets in the leaves go chirp, chirp, chirp...
Can you Move with Me?
Tune of: Do Your Ears Hang Low?
Can you wiggle like a worm?
Can you squiggle? Can you squirm?
Can you flutter?
Can you fly like a gentle butterfly?
Can you crawl upon the ground
Like a beetle that is round?
Can you move with me?
Can you flip? Can you flop?
Can you give a little hop?
Can you slither like a snake?
Can you give a little shake?
Can you dance like bee
Who is buzzing round a tree?
Can you move with me? |
Caterpillar
This is the egg, found not far away.
(point to center of other palm)
This is the caterpillar, who one sunny day,
Hatched from the egg, found not far away.
(wiggle finger)
This is the cocoon all snuggled away,
That covered the caterpillar, who one sunny day,
Hatched from the egg, found not far away.
(form fist, cup with other hand, peek inside)
This is the butterfly, who did sashay,
Out of the cocoon all snuggled away,
That covered the caterpillar, who one sunny day,
Hatched from the egg, found not far away.
(palms toward you, hook thumbs and flutter)
These are wings, on bright display
Worn by the butterfly who did sashay
Out of the cocoon all snuggled away,
That covered the caterpillar, who one sunny day,
Hatched from the egg, found not far away.
(raise and lower arms at sides)
Beautiful butterfly…Can
I watch you play?
("fly" your butterfly up, down and around)
