Online story times are designed to introduce your child to language, literature and the library. By exposing your toddler to a wide variety of the best books available and making reading an everyday part of life, you will lay the foundations for a lifelong love of reading.

Playtime

Play hide-and-seek using a stuffed animal or a toy. Hide the toy (not too well) someplace, keeping it within range of your children’s eyesight and reach. Give hints like, “Look by the lamp where Daddy likes to sit.”
Once the toy is found, have kids hide it and you search. Ask for a hint, even though it may be in plain sight. The important thing is to have fun and help your children learn to follow (and give) directions.

Children like having a “hide out” as a pretending place or just to get away from things once in a while. Inside the house, drape a blanket over a small table or two chairs, or screen a corner of a room with kitchen chairs and a sheet. Appliance boxes are usually large enough for a door to be cut in them. Encourage children to make their hide outs large enough for a friend (or you) to visit, and stay aware of what they’re doing by peeking in occasionally.

Songs & Nursery Rhymes

Cartoon of a mouse coming out of a hole in the wallWhere Are the Baby Mice?
Where are the baby mice?
(make a fist)
“Squeak, squeak, squeak!”
I cannot see them.
(peer into fist)
Peek! Peek! Peek!
Here they come out from their hole in the wall
1, 2, 3, 4, 5…
(extend fingers as counted)
And, that’s all!
(Turn palm up)

We Can Jump
We can jump, jump, jump.
We can hop, hop, hop.
We can clap, clap, clap.
We can stop, stop, stop.
We can nod our heads for “yes,”
We can shake our heads for “no.”
We can bend our knees a little bit
And sit…down…slow.

See How I Am Now
Sometimes I am tall (stand tall)
Sometimes I am small (crouch)
Sometimes I am very, very tall
(stand on tiptoes)
Sometimes I am very, very small
(crouch and hug self)
Sometimes tall, Sometimes small.
See how I am now.

Cat standing at an open doorWho’s That Knocking?
Who’s that knocking at my door?
(make knocking motion)
Who’s that knocking at my door?
Who’s that knocking at my door?
Guess who is out there?
KNOCK, KNOCK! WHO’S THERE?
MEOW! MEOW WHO?
IT’S A CAT!
(Repeat with dog, cow, rooster and bumble bee)
