Central Library Betty Brinn Children's Room - The Design
Integrating 100 years of history with a contemporary look that appeals
to children of every age is a challenge - one that was met through
the creative talents and efforts of architects working with library
staff, and many craftspeople. Color, light, fun and fantasy combine
to create a library designed for children.
The floor is at once the most noticeable feature of
the room. Navy blue linoleum frames 31 different animal shapes in
a variety of colors designed by Lois Ehlert. The animals greet children
at the entrance where they parade into the room and then appear in
a subtle pattern throughout the room to highlight areas of interest.

The lighting is designed to enhance aspects of the
room and add to the elements of movement, fun and change. Brass light
fixtures highlight the design of the floor, and overhead lighting
adds color, intensity and ambiance. To schedule a group visit or for additional
information call the children's librarian at 286-3091. |
