Access the Index

This list provides an overview of the materials in the Local History Manuscript Collections at the Milwaukee Public Library. The Local History Manuscript Collections contain manuscripts, diaries, correspondence and other primary source material that focus on the City of Milwaukee. It is a part of the Central Library’s Humanities and Archives Department. These holdings are in differing stages of organization and preparation, hence accessibility varies.

More detailed finding aids for some of the collections listed here may be consulted in paper form in the Frank P. Zeidler Humanities Room at the Central Library. Please consult the “Finding Aid” column of the list to determine if a finding aid is available for a specific collection. Existing finding aids will be published online at the Special Collections Finder, one of MPL’s Digital Collections.

The public may view the Local History Manuscript Collections' materials only by appointment in the Archives Reading Room of the Central Library. To inquire about use of the Local History Manuscript Collections' materials, contact the Humanities and Archives Department at 414 286-3061.
