Assist an Adult in Improving Their Literacy Skills
Provide instruction, assistance and encouragement to an adult who wants to improve their skills in reading, writing, math, GED preparation, or English.
Responsibilities
Be available to assist the adult learner to accomplish short term and immediate goals during drop-in tutor sessions
Complete brief reports on tutoring sessions to Site Coordinator
Promote the use of library resources by referring students to Library staff as appropriate
Requirements
A strong commitment to helping someone succeed in their personal educational goals
A willingness and patience to work at the pace needed by the adult learner
A friendly, respectful and approachable manner
Excellent communication skills
Knowledge of languages other than English may be helpful for some students
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must be available for 1-2 hours per week to work with any adult learner at the library. Hours can be weekdays, some evenings or weekends.
Must complete 9 hours of tutor trainingprovided by the library:
Sessions 1, 2, and 3
Session 4
These sessions will take place at the Central Library,
814 W. Wisconsin Avenue, from 5:15-7:45 p.m.
This session will take place at the neighborhood library chosen by the volunteer tutor.
Your completed application will be reviewed, and if there are any possible matches with currently available volunteer opportunities, we will contact you. You may also be asked to participate in an in-person interview.
