Friday, December 07, 2018 - 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Categories: Exhibits/DisplaysExploring the Milwaukee Community Through PhotographyAbout the exhibit:The photography group was offered through the Recreation Therapy program to Veterans receiving treatment in the HUD/VASH (Housing Urban Development/Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing) and Mental Health programs. Participants in VA's photography group learned how to use the techniques of photography such as lighting, framing, subject matter and composition to help them capture images in the community. Group started off by taking pictures of the grounds of the VA and then went into the community to various places including:, Milwaukee Model Railroad Club, Havenwoods State Park, Third Ward Gallery Night, Milwaukee County Zoo. Some of the Veterans included pictures that they took outside of group. Why Photography: The use of photography provided Veterans with mental and/or physical health disorders (e.g. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Substance Use Disorder/Addictions, Obesity, Chronic Pain, Social Isolation, Depression, Anxiety etc.) to experience many therapeutic benefits including: increased knowledge and exploration of various community sites new to them; improved focus and attention; decreased stress, increased self-esteem and confidence, sense of personal accomplishment, decreased social isolation and improved social skills, acquisition of new, healthy leisure skills. Special thank you for the support of the Elmbrook Rotary and photography volunteers Anita Burgermeister, Kristine Hinrichs, and Time Holte.Exhibit will be located at the Milwaukee Public Central Library from December 7th-January 3rd. Come meet and greet the Veterans artists on Friday, December 14th from 1pm-3pm.
