Coming to America Book Club at Virtual

Wednesday, August 17, 2022 - 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM

Audience: Adults/ Older Adults/ Teens

Categories: Book Club/Discussion

This book club approaches American identity as an evolving and ongoing conversation, using fiction and non-fiction to explore questions of identity, assimilation, language, cuisine, generational change and other aspects of life in the United States. August's selection is A Song Everlasting by Ha Jin. Request a physical copy here,  or request the e-book or e-audio book on the Libby library app. Sign into the app with your library card.  After popular singer Yao Tian takes a private gig in New York at the end of a tour with his state-supported choir, expecting to pick up some extra cash for his daughter's tuition fund, the consequences of his choice spiral out of control. On his return to China, he is informed that the sponsors of the event were in support of Taiwan's secession and he must deliver a formal self-criticism. When asked to forfeit his passport to his employer, he impulsively decides to return to New York to protest the government's threat to his artistic integrity. Register in advance for this meeting:  https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUqcuysrDkoEtIw2wNr2lWn9tbSAjsG53pM After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
