Community Open House

Monday, November 26, 6-8 p.m.
Milwaukee Public Library Capitol Branch
3969 N. 74th St.

Milwaukee Public Library is building a new facility to replace the Capitol Branch. Before the process begins, we would like input from the patrons and neighbors of the Capitol Branch.

At the Open House, Milwaukee Public Library staff will present:

  • An overview of the process and potential timeline for replacing the Capitol Branch with a new facility.
  • An update of the library branch development campaign.
  • A slideshow of the branch libraries recently completed and the Good Hope Project currently under construction.

Library staff will be on hand to answer your questions and receive your input on what you would like to see in the new branch.

The Capitol Branch will be replaced with a mixed-use building. Currently the plan is to begin the development process by researching new potential library sites during 2018. In his 2014 budget, Mayor Tom Barrett prioritized redevelopment of the library branch system in a multi-year building and renovation program with an investment of $21.5 million over five to seven years. The project calls for rebuilding four branches – Forest Home (replaced by the new Mitchell Street branch in 2017), Mill Road, Capitol and Martin Luther King. The four branches scheduled for rebuilding will be redeveloped as part of mixed-use projects – a more affordable approach.
