All available genealogical, historical societies and museums that are available for African American research.

Two of the genealogical societies listed are not African American specific but can provide more information and ways to go about finding additional documents to aid your search of historical records.

Milwaukee County Genealogical Society
MCGS Membership Meetings and Classes are held in the 1st Floor Conference Room near the main entrance of the Milwaukee Public Library.


Historical Societies

Milwaukee County Historical Society
The Research Library of the Milwaukee County Historical Society has a wide variety of information about the history of the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County. All materials are for reference use in the library only and may not be checked out.

Wisconsin Historical Society
The Wisconsin Historical Society is both a state agency and a private membership organization. The WHS has: Cemetery, Census, Church, Family Histories, Images, Immigration, Local Histories, Maps, Military, Naturalization, Newspapers, and Vital Records.


Museums

Wisconsin Black Historical Society / Museum
The Wisconsin Black Historical Society / Museum's mission is to document and preserve the historical heritage of African descent in Wisconsin. The museum exhibits, collects and disseminates materials depicting this heritage. Serving as a resource center for all people interested in Wisconsin's rich African American heritage, the Museum's purpose is to promote community and cultural activities.
